We offer gallery walls in the heart of the city for you to showcase and sell your work; a beautiful, historic venue for events, talks and meetings; and opportunities for filming traditional printing equipment in action and expert historical consultancy. 

Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print is a pressroom and gallery nestled in the tranquil gardens of St Anthony’s Hall and overlooked by the city walls. We are just a 20-minute walk from York railway station and within easy access parking and bus services. The venue offers step free access.

Meet

Host events, talks and meetings in our beautiful pressroom. Whether you’re looking for a regular spot for your creative writing group or wish to host a talk in an unusual, historic venue in the heart of the city, please get in touch.

It’s an intimate venue and capacity is normally 25 seated and 40 standing. We are wheelchair accessible with a disabled toilet. Key holding is available for regular groups.

Included as standard: 25 chairs, 2 tables (6x3ft & 3.6x2.3ft), 43" display screen with USB port and HDMI to USB / USBC cable, WiFi, and access to our staff kitchen. Additional chairs and tables may be available in advance upon request.

Our room hire rate starts at £25 per hour. Please get in touch with as much notice as possible prior to your proposed event date.

Filming & Consultancy

We offer historical consultancy and opportunities for filming traditional printing equipment in a beautiful setting.

Our equipment includes a Crown Columbian press from 1845, a large Albion press from 1853, and a range of powered proofing press from the 1930s to 1960s. Our team has decades of experience in practical printing and research.

Exhibit

We offer gallery and exhibition space for work relating to print and the book arts. This unique exhibition space adjoins our exceptionally well-equipped studio.

We offer: 14ft and a 23ft wall with one or both opposing hanging spaces available to hire; STAS picture hanging system to easily display framed and unframed works; two vertical glass display units; the regular footfall attracted by Thin Ice Press and St Anthony’s Garden; advertising on our website and a feature in our newsletter sent to over 1500 subscribers for shows of a month or longer; and normal opening hours of Friday to Monday 10:00-17:00, Tuesdays 18:00-20:00, and Thursdays 13:00-20:00.

Exhibition fees start at £200 per week and vary depending on the duration of the exhibition, whether it is a selling exhibition, and any additional needs for display other than use of the STAS picture hanging system. Most exhibitions are offered for one month with occasional shorter or longer runs.
