Five-Week Festival of Print

On this immersive course, you’ll get hands-on experience with five different printmaking and book arts techniques. You’ll learn the basics of linocut printing, Risograph, drypoint, and letterpress, alongside bookbinding skills to create a unique portfolio showcasing your work.

The course is taught at Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print, an exceptionally well-equipped printing and printmaking studio in the heart of York, across five consecutive Wednesday evenings at 18:00 to 20:00 from Wednesday 12 November to Wednesday 10 December 2025.

Under the guidance of our experienced technicians across five weeks, you'll explore:

Linocut Printing

In this workshop you will learn how to transfer your design onto a block, see demonstrations of carving, and print your very own linocut.

Risograph Printing

Explore the analogue charm of Risograph printing, transforming drawings and collages into vibrant two-colour prints.

Drypoint Etching

Learn to create and print from your own plates using drypoint etching tools, experimenting with various mark-making techniques.

Letterpress Printing

In this two-hour session, you will get to grips with letterpress, see what it means to lock up a forme, and learn about York’s history of print and design.

Bookbinding

The final week of the course will provide an introduction to the tools of bookbinding, cover grain direction, and different types of visible stitching. You will create a portfolio for the work you have printed throughout the course.

Throughout these weekly workshops, you’ll gain hands-on experience, build your skills, and develop a unique portfolio of work. Suitable for beginners eager to explore printmaking and bookbinding, as well as for those with experience looking to expand their practice. The course will leave you well equipped to pursue your own projects independently or as a member at Thin Ice Press.

£195. All materials are provided, and you’ll receive your very own Thin Ice Press apron!
