York Ghost Week

Limited edition prints created at Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print in collaboration with the York Ghost Merchants.

Inspired by a Halloween Greeting Card from the turn of the twentieth century, this poster offers a twist on a game in which girls and young women would stand before their mirror and ask to see the face of their future husband. In our reimagining, a ghost rises from York's ancient stones to whisper an answer to her questions.

Printed on Fabriano Rosaspina Ivory 220gsm with hand torn edges. Designed, typeset and printed by Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print, with an original linocut by Izzy Williamson.

This print imagines a new chapter in the York Ghost Merchant's lore. Decades after J. Redferne began his search for ghosts made across the Yorkshire Ridings, and in the year of the Great Exhibition, came the precursor of Ghost Week – an exhibition of ghosts of all sorts, some moving towards that iconic silhouette.
